The Government has introduced a more restrictive practice for temporary work permits for asylum seekers waiting for a decision on their asylum application. This is another dramatic restrictive measure, in addition to the 13 measures launched last autumn. Hereafter, asylum seekers will have no other alternative while waiting than passivity. This will increase frustration in the reception centres and weaken early integretion. Read Borderland's comments in Klassekampen.

New Restrictive Measure

The Government has decided to make it more difficult to get a temporary work permit while waiting for a decision on the asylum application:
- Asylum seekers from countries where there is a system for passports or national identity cards must present such documentation to get a temporary work permit.
- Asylum seekers from countries where there is no system for passports or national identity cards will get a work permit only if the stated identity is seen as probable (balance of probabilities).

Changes in Utlendingsforskriften

The Government has proposed a number of changes to the Aliens Regulation (Utlendingsforskriften) as a follow-up of the 13 restrictive measures launched in September 2008. Borderland opposes all the changes.

The Government wants to change the Aliens Regulation (Utlendingsforskriften) in a way that will cancel the positive decision reached by stornemnda on Afghan asylum seekers. This will probably again lead to a more restrictive practice for Afghan asylum seekers and others, in violation of UNHCR recommendations and guidelines.

New Restrictive Measure

9 January 2009

The Government proposes that in order to bring someone to Norway for the purpose of establishing a family, the person residing in Norway must have four years work experience or education in Norway. The requirement now introduced applies only when someone wants to establish a family, such as enter into marriage. The requirement so far does not apply for reunification of existing families.

News Story: Glad for fargerikt Norge

New statistics show that in spite of the focus on the increased number of asylum seekers arriving in Norway, the majority of the Norwegian people were not in favour of more restrictive measures. The panic felt by the Norwegian Government was not shared by the Norwegian people, as commented by Borderland.
